Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, marched towards the Prime Minister’s residence to demand the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. He was accompanied by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. The Congress leaders staged a protest outside the PM’s residence.
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “We are marching to Prime Minister Modi’s house to demand answers regarding the brutality inflicted upon young students yesterday. The government neither wants to take responsibility nor debate the issue in Parliament. The Prime Minister and the Home Minister should resign for ruining the future of India’s youth.”
Joining Rahul Gandhi in the protest were Party President Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, K.C. Venugopal, Pawan Khera, and several other leaders.
Priyanka Gandhi said, “We want to hold a discussion in the House, but the opposition is not allowed to speak. This House belongs to the very youth against whom the government is using lathis and firing tear gas shells. The students’ concerns must be heard, and the Education Minister must resign.”
The police detained former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi. Upon being detained, Charanjit Singh Channi, Chairman of the Punjab Congress Campaign Committee, remarked, “This is BJP’s terrorism. They do not listen to the students.”
Congress MP Syed Nasir Hussain stated, “No one is allowed to speak. In fact, no MP is permitted to speak in Parliament; the Prime Minister does not even come to the House. That is why all opposition MPs have come to his residence—so that our voices can be heard.”
Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi also visited Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital to meet the injured students.
