Hyderabad: App-based cab drivers, auto drivers, delivery workers and goods transport drivers across Telangana will observe a statewide flash strike on July 22.
The workers are demanding fair fares, implementation of welfare measures and regulation of aggregator platforms.
The workers have also warned of an indefinite strike after August 8 if their demands remain unresolved.
The decision received the backing of several major trade unions at a meeting held at the CITU City Office in Musheerabad on Monday.
The strike is expected to involve workers associated with app-based platforms such as Ola, Uber, Rapido, Swiggy, Zomato, Zepto, Blinkit and Porter, among others.
The workers are demanding that the Telangana government and platform companies introduce a fair minimum base fare along with rational per-kilometre and per-minute rates for app-based transport services.
They have also sought the immediate notification of the Gig and Platform Workers Rules, constitution of a Welfare Board, and implementation of the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines, 2025, to regulate fares instead of allowing companies to fix them unilaterally.
Addressing the meeting, Shaik Salauddin, Founder President of the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU), apologised to commuters for the inconvenience the strike may cause but said workers had been left with no alternative after their long-pending demands remained unaddressed.
“Our fight is for fair fares, decent livelihoods and justice for all gig and platform workers,” he said.
Trade union leaders said the struggle of gig workers was part of the broader fight for labour rights, dignity and social security.
They appealed to app-based drivers and delivery workers across Telangana to participate in the July 22 bandh and prepare for an indefinite strike from August 8 if there is no response from the government or aggregator companies.
