Hyderabad: A day after a criminal case was registered against him on allegations of sexual harassment and assault, trainee IPS officer M. Uday Krishna Reddy allegedly attempted suicide by consuming a poisonous substance in Hyderabad on Monday morning.
He was rushed to Jayanth Hospital in SR Nagar, where he is undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Police have launched an inquiry into the incident even as the investigation into the sexual harassment case continues.
According to preliminary information, Uday Krishna Reddy had gone to his advocate’s residence in Moti Nagar, Erragadda, on Sunday night.
Early on Monday morning, he allegedly consumed a poisonous substance in an apparent suicide attempt. Family members immediately shifted him to Jayanthi Hospital, where doctors admitted him to the ICU. His condition is stated to be under close medical observation.
The alleged suicide attempt comes barely a day after Attapur police registered a criminal case against Uday Krishna Reddy based on a complaint lodged by a fellow trainee IPS officer at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA).
The complainant accused him of sexual harassment, stalking, physical assault, criminal intimidation and blackmail during their training. Police also invoked provisions of the Information Technology Act over allegations relating to violation of privacy and the transmission of sexually explicit material.According to the complaint, the alleged harassment began in late June. The woman officer alleged that Uday Krishna Reddy repeatedly sent sexually explicit and abusive WhatsApp messages, made derogatory remarks in the presence of fellow trainees, physically assaulted her, secretly recorded a private video without her consent and later circulated it
Meanwhile, Attapur police had issued a notice to Uday Krishna Reddy on Sunday, directing him to submit a detailed response to the allegations within eight days as part of the investigation.
Police sources said that, without informing either the investigating officers or officials of the National Police Academy, Uday Krishna Reddy left the academy premises and later uploaded an Instagram Story.
Investigators are examining the social media post and reconstructing the sequence of events leading to the incident.
Police are continuing their investigation into the sexual harassment case while simultaneously probing the alleged suicide attempt.
Investigators are expected to record Uday Krishna Reddy’s statement after his medical condition stabilises. Officials from the National Police Academy are yet to issue an official statement on the latest developments.
