Prime Minister Modi warned that children, the elderly and those working outdoors are particularly vulnerable to extreme heat. He said that no one should ignore the warning signs of heatstroke, which can quickly turn dangerous. Modi also urged citizens to help those suffering from heatstroke and ensure that they get water, ORS etc. to provide them with relief. “Be alert for symptoms of heatstroke such as dizziness, nausea or extreme fatigue. If anyone around you feels unwell, listless or has a headache, immediately move them to a cool, shady place and help them,” he said. The Prime Minister urged citizens to call their elderly parents, grandparents and loved ones whenever possible during heatwaves to check on their well-being.
Prime Minister Modi appealed to the people to remember the birds and animals in this harsh weather. “Let us also remember the birds and animals around us in this intense heat. A small bowl of water kept outside your house, balconies, terraces, shops or offices can be a lifesaver for a thirsty bird. Compassion should be our guide in these difficult times,” said Prime Minister Modi.
According to the India Meteorological Department, severe heatwave conditions are prevailing in many parts of the country. It has warned that most parts of central and northwestern India are likely to continue under heatwave to severe heatwave conditions for the next three to four days. Severe heatwave conditions prevailed in several parts of Chhattisgarh, while extreme temperatures were also recorded at isolated places in eastern Uttar Pradesh and eastern Madhya Pradesh. Heatwave conditions were also recorded in some parts of Uttarakhand, Haryana, Rajasthan, Bihar, Odisha, Telangana and coastal Andhra Pradesh. On Tuesday, Banda in Uttar Pradesh recorded a temperature of 47.4 degrees Celsius. In plain areas, a heatwave is declared if the maximum temperature crosses 45 degrees; if the same temperatures exceed 47 degrees, they are classified as ‘severe heatwave’.
