Bhagat Singh Koshyari Receives Padma Bhushan
Uttarakhand: Bhagat Singh Koshyari—a veteran leader known in political circles as ‘Bhagat Da,’ the former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, and the former Governor of Maharashtra—has been conferred with the nation’s prestigious civilian honor, the Padma Bhushan. A look back at Bhagat Da’s history reveals that his life has been marked by significant challenges. Today, alongside Bhagat Da, we also introduce you to other prominent figures from Uttarakhand who have brought glory to the ‘Devbhumi’ (Land of the Gods) and earned accolades such as the Padma Bhushan.
Rising from a humble family in the hills, Bhagat Singh Koshyari carved out a strong identity for himself in national politics. In the political history of Uttarakhand, Bhagat Singh Koshyari is counted among those leaders who forged a distinct image for themselves through the strength of their organizational skills, ideology, and direct public engagement. Bhagat Singh Koshyari’s life is regarded as a significant chapter in the social and political consciousness of Uttarakhand.
During the Uttarakhand statehood movement, Bhagat Singh Koshyari was among the key figures who forcefully articulated the demand for a separate state on the national stage. He consistently turned the geographical hardships of the hills—including issues such as migration, unemployment, and developmental deficits—into central political issues.
During the days of the movement, he traveled from village to village, raising awareness among the people. According to BJP State President Mahendra Bhatt, Bhagat Da played a pivotal role in strengthening the ideological foundation of the Uttarakhand movement. Following the creation of the state, his influence within Uttarakhand’s politics grew even stronger. He came to be regarded as an organizational leader who engaged in direct dialogue with party workers. He is also credited with making a major contribution to extending the BJP’s organizational reach into the remote regions of the hills. This is precisely why, even today, he is remembered with great respect in the rural areas of Uttarakhand.
During his tenure as Chief Minister, he prioritized the development of the hill regions, focusing on roads, education, and strengthening rural infrastructure. He would often reach out directly to the public, eschewing large convoys and formal protocols. Political analysts believe that Bhagat Da’s greatest strength lay in his public outreach; he placed greater faith in the politics of dialogue and interaction rather than mere speech-making. This is precisely why, even within the BJP organization, he was viewed as an approachable and down-to-earth leader.
Bhagat Singh Koshyari has also served as the Governor of Maharashtra. He was appointed as the Governor of Maharashtra on September 5, 2019. His appointment to a large and politically sensitive state like Maharashtra reflected the confidence reposed in him by the BJP leadership. His tenure as Governor witnessed several major political developments. During the events surrounding the struggle for power in Maharashtra, his decisions even became the subject of debate at the national level. However, on several occasions, the opposition also criticized some of his statements and decisions. Furthermore, in August 2020, Koshyari was entrusted with the additional charge of the Governor of Goa.
