A retired Army brigadier was reportedly shot dead after violence stemming from a road rage confrontation on the Dehradun-Mussoorie road on Monday morning, police said.
According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Retired Army Brigadier VK Joshi.
The incident began when occupants of a Delhi-registered SUV and a Dehradun-registered SUV got into a dispute over overtaking, which quickly escalated. The passengers in the Dehradun-registered SUV allegedly chased the Delhi-registered SUV and opened fire, aiming at its tyres to force it to stop.
However, one of the bullets reportedly missed its intended target and struck an Army officer who was out on a morning walk nearby. The officer sustained serious injuries and later succumbed to them during treatment at a hospital.
Following the firing, the Delhi-registered SUV lost control and crashed into a tree near Johri village. The accused then allegedly assaulted the occupants of the vehicle before fleeing the scene.
Superintendent of Police (City) Pramod Kumar said a district-wide alert has been issued, and police teams have set up checkpoints while scanning CCTV footage to identify and apprehend the suspects.
