Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Indian athletes who returned after winning medals at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games on Sunday and congratulated them on their stellar performance in the competition. On this occasion, the PM remarked that the success of the medal-winning Indian athletes would inspire a new generation of sportspeople.
Following the meeting, Prime Minister Modi shared photos and posted on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote, “I was delighted to host the Commonwealth Games 2026 medal winners at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg. I learned about their sporting experiences. Every athlete has brought glory to the nation through their outstanding performance. Their success will inspire many young people.”
During his interaction with the athletes, Prime Minister Modi said, “Those who play, will shine. Always keep India’s spirits high.”
Praising the athletes’ performance, the Prime Minister said, “Friends, you have done a wonderful job. You have brought honor to the country. I congratulate you from the bottom of my heart.” He encouraged the medal winners to continue their pursuit of excellence, adding, “Believe me, you will continue to achieve victories in the future, and we will meet here again.”
Prime Minister Modi became quite emotional during his conversation with gold medal-winning weightlifter Mirabai Chanu. Chanu herself was moved to tears as she recalled her struggles and the moment she stood on the podium while the Indian flag was raised. She said, “So many tears were flowing. I feel as though every drop of those tears is like a gold medal falling.”
