There is welcome news for travelers on the Dehradun-Haridwar National Highway: major road safety initiatives costing ₹319 crore have commenced to curb accidents on this route. The project entails the construction of seven new flyovers, along with service lanes and foot-over bridges.
The Dehradun-Haridwar highway was upgraded from two lanes to four lanes in 2020. However, the road widening led to higher vehicle speeds and a subsequent rise in accidents—a trend confirmed by a road safety audit conducted by the NHAI. To mitigate these accidents, the NHAI submitted a proposal for safety measures to the Government of India. Following government approval, construction work has begun. Work is currently underway at several locations, including the Miyanwala flyover, Jeevangarh, and Chhidarwala. All roadworks are scheduled for completion within two and a half years.
Construction of the new flyovers is taking place near Jakhan Bridge, Jeevangarh, Miyanwala, Chhidarwala, and Raiwala. A key feature of this project is the construction of a flyover spanning approximately 2.25 kilometers from Miyanwala to Nakraunda.
This is the largest structure among the seven approved flyovers. Additionally, flyovers will be built near the Dental College at Jakhan Bridge, two in Jeevangarh, one in Chhidarwala, and two in Raiwala. Service lanes covering a total distance of approximately 44 kilometers will be constructed on both sides of the highway. Furthermore, to facilitate safe pedestrian crossings, two foot-over bridges will be built; their exact locations are yet to be finalized.
Following the construction of the Dehradun-Delhi Expressway, vehicular movement on the old road connecting Datkali to Ganeshpur has been discontinued. Vehicles will now be able to travel along this route only up to Mohand; the NHAI has handed over this road to the Forest Department in the interest of wildlife safety, and the police have been informed accordingly. An elevated corridor spanning approximately 12 kilometers—built over a seasonal river—has been constructed on the Dehradun-Delhi Expressway, stretching from Datkali to Ganeshpur.
