Government schools in Motapuram village, Khammam district, Telangana are facing a steady drop in student enrolment. The trend mirrors a wider problem across rural Telangana, where public schools are losing students to private and residential institutions. Teachers, parents and local leaders say the shift is linked to migration, financial pressure and changing preferences among families.
Ramesh, a government teacher, said one school in a nearby hamlet had to be shut down because there were no students left in Bilyatanda. The few children from that habitation now attend other government schools in the area.
Another teacher, Phani Kumari, said Motapuram government school has only 17 students and two teachers.
